Arteta – We’re improving a lot | job interview | News – Arsenal.com | Region & Cash

Mikel Arteta addressed the media following our 4-0 Florida Cup win over Chelsea on Saturday and was asked about his side’s development, the options he has in defense and the latest on our injured players.

Here’s a full transcript of what he said…

on whether Arsenal supporters should be excited about this team…
Yes, but it was a friendly game. As you could see, there are many positives to take away from the game. The way we played, the intensity we showed, the way we tried to show who we are as a team. But at the same time it’s just a test match. Don’t get carried away. There are still many things that we need to improve and do better. But I think it’s good to get some momentum, to end the tour the right way, to bring some joy to our fans and everyone who helped make this tour happen. Now it’s time to return to London, focus and keep making improvements and progress.

on the importance of getting deals done early…
It’s ideal for any coach you ask, the sooner you get the players the better. Because you have to bring them into the cohesion of the team, understand each other, feel relaxed and comfortable in the team and the fact that he (Jesus) has been with us for a few weeks makes a big difference.

whether the result changes anything in the transfer strategy…
Nothing. Once again, don’t get carried away. There were a lot of positives, there are a lot of things we can do much, much better than we did today and we need to keep improving as a team.

about his possibilities in the team…
I’m concentrating on the players I have available here. We know what we would like to do, which is to get the best out of the players we have.

on the back four…
At the moment Tierney and Tomiyasu are not fit, we have other options but I think it was good to try different things, to build relationships in big games and I’m happy with the way they played.

on Zinchenko…
He really wanted to play and I knew that. It was a maximum of 45 minutes, but you could tell right away that he was comfortable. He understands everything I want, he understands the process and I thought he made a really good game.

about William Saliba…
I’m really happy to see how he’s playing, how he’s adapted to the team, the maturity he’s shown at 21, keep it up. We will continue to develop him, he has huge potential, he is already a top player and we have to make him even better.

when he’s ready…
He looked done to me today.

on the fitness of Fabio Vieira and Takehiro Tomiyasu…
Yes, Tomi is about to do a few training sessions. Hopefully next week and Fabio probably a little longer. I think he still needs about a week before he starts with the team but he’s worked hard and was really unlucky to start his Arsenal career this way but he’s fitting back in nicely.

if Gabriel Jesus is okay…
Yes, he took a hit in his quad in the first half, I think that was it and it wasn’t very comfortable to continue and we didn’t take any chances today.

on tour…
We had a great time. Thank you to everyone who helped organize this tour. We tried to make it as enjoyable and productive as possible and sportingly the facilities were really good in both games we played, really good games, great trophy, great crowds so we’re looking forward to that one day return.

about the depth of our squad…
We are where we are. At the moment we have injuries of course, you can see that we are still a bit short in some positions for the way we want to play, but that’s something we’re trying to address. We’ve definitely improved the quality of the team and the level of the squad is of course something we want to keep improving.

if Gabriel Jesus can fight for the Golden Boot…
I dunno, we’re in preseason. What I can guarantee you is that he will do whatever it takes to be the best player he can, that’s it.

on signing American players…
We already have one that we just signed, so it’s a good start. Let’s see how he adapts, but it’s a huge market, there are many choices and hopefully we can bring you a few more to make you happy.
